BT 1 - Nature vs Nurture
So what’s the major difference between current medical practice and Bioenergetic theory?
Essentially it all comes down to that age old question of Nature vs Nurture.
Current medical theory still treats disease based on the genetic model - essentially the major go to for the last 100 years in most cases of sickness and disease has largely been, “its in your genes”, and although the still young field of epigenetic’s is slowly making waves in this theory, it is still used as the basic explanation for many different diseases including;
Depression
Cancer
Dementia
Obesity
Diabetes
…and many more where at the very least you are often considered as “genetically predisposed”. (1)
This way of seeing disease has its roots in eugenic theories and continually fuels the notion that some people are simply “better” than others. As well as this it tends to place blame on the individual, whilst not needing to acknowledge the effects of environment, including wealth disparity, privilege, and social status caused directly by the culture we are currently living in. (2)
Effectively the claim is “its your bad genes - but don’t worry, we have a drug for that!” (3)
What the industry is then able to do is offer potentially expensive methods usually aimed at treating symptoms rather than causes. This tends to protect industry from any real blame they could incur for the state of people’s health.
Bioenergetic Theory
We can quickly point out a myriad of problems with the current theory, including that, were our health problems mainly a question of genetics, then traditional cultures who begin to eat our food and live our way of life should not be getting our diseases given the previous absence of those diseases, such as the Pima Indians. (4)
Not to mention the fact that chronic disease states have EXPLODED in the last hundred years - highly unlikely to be caused by a sudden wave of genetic changes necessitating expensive experimental drug therapies to counter.
Bioenergetic theory would instead acknowledge that our individual genetics play a part in how we are built, but that our ENVIRONMENT, including food and nutrition, social status, stress levels, and community, plays the largest part in whether or not we, for instance, develop cancer, diabetes, or dementia, and whether or not we might recover.
In a good environment, rich with healthy foods, supportive communities, good relationships, access to nature, and having a livelihood full of creativity, interest, and self determination, we thrive and are far less likely to become sick or diseased. This means a drastic turnaround from a health model based on “faulty genes”. (5)
Bioenergetic Theory suggests that what gave you diabetes, for instance, isn’t that your parents gave you “bad genes”, but that maybe you were brought up in a struggling household, fed processed food full of trans and polyunsaturated fats, had to cope with stressed and arguing parents, and have spent most of your life worried about not having enough money to put food on the table.
This is not to mention living in a society that judges people on whether or not we can see a six pack and suggests we move more, eat less, and avoid anything that makes us feel good like chocolate, sugar, or even coffee.
Practical Meaning
We have the power, the ability, and the choice about how we live and how we thrive, and given adequate information and a lack of stress, can determine for ourselves whether we become sick.
This also means that society and industry themselves play a large part in whether we are healthy or not, because of the dangerous environment, foods, and stresses they create.
We are not simply determined creatures, needing to rely on doctors and specialists for our health needs, but are potentially empowered and strongly capable of reversing most health issues ourselves, especially given information and community support.
We are made by nature, but our nurturing of ourselves and of our environment determines our health and youthfulness.
This is the bioenergetic starting point.
